TEXAS SENIOR VOLLEYBALL

TSVA NEWSLETTER – 2007-2008  NO.  4       July 31, 2008

cthom@satx.rr.com

Abbreviations:  Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB); United States America Volleyball (USAV); National Seniors Games Association (NSGA); Texas Senior Games Association (TSGA); Texas Seniors/Masters Volleyball, Inc., (TS/MV); Texas Senior Volleyball Association (TSVA); Lone Star Region (LSR) which is South TX, Sun Country Region (SUR) which is West TX and North Texas Region (NTR).

CARL’S CORNER:  Want to go on a volleyball TOUR.  I have been received advertisements from this group.  Now I am requesting your help.  This November we began a new year of volleyball season, (2008-09).  There are many players out there and I need your help finding them, recruiting them, getting them on the E mailing list, so find a player, get me their information.  NOW I REMIND YOU THAT the “Texas Senior Volleyball Association” has a website, not always up to date, but… www.tsmvolleyball.org.  In fact most all our organizations have a site.  The young ladies of San Antonio promoting Christian Athletes of SA has one too… www.pcasa.ws, check it out.

OBITUARY:  A shocker, a couple days ago, I called an old friend volleyball player about 30 South of me, had to leave a message.  My call back come Sunday from the wife and as I asked how they doing was surprised when she said, “did you not get the word” which is NO, and I find that he passed on November 29, 2007 from lung c word.  Two fellow volleyballers of old  was to notify us, which they did not.  Todd Kincaide, born December 9, 1934, a long time San Antonian, a pioneer of the Texas Masters and Seniors, once considered one of the best blockers in the USA moved on.  Condolences to his wife Barbara and children.

USAV (www.usavolleyball.org):  The USA Volleyball Championships in 2009 will be hosted in the Convention Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and if all goes accordingly to past years, the dates will be May 23 thru May 30.

NSGA (www.nsga.org):  The National Senior Games Organization.  The 2009 National Senior Games will be held in Palo Alto on the Campus of Stanford University.  There will be eleven volleyball courts at four locations (Maples Pavilion +).  NSGA will be open for Registration come September 1, 2008.  You must qualify in the Texas State Games in Temple to be eligible and/or qualify in Huntsman World Senior Games. The 2011 National Senior Games will be in Houston.

TSGA (www.tsga.org):  The Texas State Games Association will be played in Temple in 2008, and the date for volleyball is SUNDAY, September 28, at the Temple High School.  It is too late for the men folks and some ladies who might just desire to attend the National Senior Event in San Francisco area because I know of no men  except, I believe some of the El Paso area did qualified and some ladies did qualify for the state in local events.  In the last newsletter recommendations for changes to qualifying rules was requested but... I have received no recommendations from any Texas players relating to the hard rules imposed by TSGA on our players in our state.

TSVA (www.tsmvolleyball.org)  The event in Farmers Branch with Margaret Young’s good food and volleyball play in July, we had a good turnout, a total of nineteen teams, eleven lady and 8 men.  The BarBQue dinner was delicious too.  Thanks to Margaret and Carl Young.  Now all these years the South Austin Recreation Center, the CITY of AUSTIN will no longer let us have the volleyball courts for the weekend which has always been the middle of August.  So what do we do about Ralph’s Capitol City Fling, we move to WACO, one hundred miles North.  The ladies and men will have two courts each in different facilities.  Registration is slow, speed it up, getting a lot of excuses like working Saturday Mornings, have a wedding to attend, vacations, etc.  Come on ladies and gmen, I need you folks to fill those gyms.  Let us not let adult volleyball sink in Texas.  WACO ant NO Lukenbach, but its WACO. Our event for the month of October is programmed for Houston at the Lutheran North High School, easy access to reach for all except South side in Houston.

LSR (www.lsvolleyball.org) NTR (www.ntrvolleyball.org) SUR (www.suncountryvb.org)Above are the three regions of USA Volleyball which Texas is divided, Lone Star, North Texas, and Sun Country.  The 2007/08 season is over, volleyball will resume the very 1st day of November 2008.

Huntsman World Senior Games (www.seniorgames.net):  There is a reason why this is the premier annual senior tournament in the world.  First, it has more than 120 teams, has an international flavor which both add to the fun of the competition.  There is an eight match guarantee with pool play, followed by a double elimination tournament in each age division.  Four full days of play make up each of two sessions with each session composed of different age brackets, allowing players to compete in both sessions, if desired.  THAT MAKES 8 DAYS OF VOLLEYBALL for both men and women and the following applies:  Age group for men are 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 74+, and 77+ and the ladies have 50, 55, 60, 65, and 70.  Dates for play are:  Session #1 October 10 – 14 the 55s, 65s, 70s and men’s 74+; session #2, October 15 – 18 the 50s, 60s,  70s and men’s 77+.  Teams must be Registered NLT August 20, 2008.  These play dates have been revised since the last newsletter.

College Volleyball (www.avca.org):   It’s that time of the year again for the College ladies.  I live only 15 to 20 minutes from Texas State and they are getting prepared and they will not permit me to play with them and I live 300 yards from the head coach.

High School (www.uil.utexas,edu/athletics/volleyball)  The young ladies, they are back too working out for the 2008 year and a lot of anticipation ahead here in my area because UIL rearranged the teams for District play.  Many will be playing new and different schools this year.  This city has had two 4a schools that abused each other for years, now one has gone to 5a.  The playoff for STATE will be in November and if they don't change, at Texas State, San Marcos.

National Teams – The United States men and women National Teams both qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.  The dates of the Olympics are 8 – 24 August 2008.  There was an announcement that NBC will carry the games on TV and that a website you could check out to find what will be televised (www.usoc.org/news/event).  I checked and there is no schedule there yet or I could not find.

Financial Report – The period since the last Newsletter, we have had one event, Farmers Branch. and thanks to Margaret and Carl Young, the TSVA profited $827.  The next newsletter will have a balance for the Association.

CARL’S CORNER:  The ten dollar ($10) annual fee no longer exist.  Our members are volleyball players with 50 years experience in life.  We have never limited our players to Texas residents, though that is our name, we have always welcomed all, WE STILL DO WELCOME ALL to play volleyball with us and you are a member if you are the golden age of fifty or above regardless of how many above.  Records will be maintained of players attending TSVA functions and the same benefits will apply.  Please note that after all USAV Championships, we turn the calendar.  In other words, all who was born in the year of 1959, come June 2008, you are considered 50, WOW.

USAV (www.usavolleyball.org):  The USA Volleyball Championships in 2008 to be hosted at the Georgia World Congress Center, 285Andrew Young International Boulevard NW, Atlanta, Georgia 30313.  Games begin May 24, ending May 31 (Two sessions - Masters/Seniors 5’s, 24-27 May and Masters/Seniors 0’s, 28-31 May.  USAV on their website has Matching Service.  This is a tool for those who are searching for a team or a team in need of players for s a Player and Team Masters/Seniors divisions.  To participate in Seniors Division, there are no qualifying events… but you must individually register with USAV and a team entry fee is required.  We send seven (7) teams, 3 men and 4 women:  Entered are Men 75+, “Texas Seniors,” Men 55, “Texas Yahoos,” and Men 50, “Cross Country.”   Ladies are 70+, “Texas Kickers,” Lady 65, “Texas Stars,” two Lady 60 teams, Alamo Stars (I left out the Alamo Stars in last newsletter) and Texas Crewd.  One men Masters 40 team whom the players participate with us quite a lot, the SCS Men’s 40; Sullivan Contracting of Seguin.Good Luck to all yall in Georgia, and they say yall there too, yall.

NSGA (www.nsga.org):  The National Senior Games Organization.  The 2009 National Senior Games will be held in Palo Alto on the Campus of Stanford University.  There will be eleven volleyball courts at four locations (Maples Pavilion +).The above and the following has been furnished by Mr Hal Lyvers of California.  A meeting on May 13 in Pasadena, California was hosted to improve Senior Olympics volleyball.  In attendance:  Jurgen Padberg, Managing Dir of the 2009 National Senior Games, Ray Hoyt, Dir of NSG and Athlete Relations, Monica Paul, Associate Dir of Events USAV, Audrey Pastore, California Senior Games Association, Cynthia Rosedale Senior Olympics State Championships Coordinator, Ann Davenport, Commissioner, Southern California Volleyball Association and a number of California volleyball players.

Discussed:  Ray Hoyt presented a plan whereby USAV will provide assistance to the Senior Olympics to improve Senior Olympics volleyball tournaments via a partnership between Senior Olympics and USAV.  The terms and conditions of this partnership are being developed.  Mike Chandler of USAV is participating.  What this means:  The tournaments will be run in the same manner that USAV and/or the Huntsman tournaments are conducted.  Tournament pool play with reseeding of teams if necessary into Gold, Silver, and Bronze playoff divisions are planned depending upon the number of teams entered in an age group.  A double elimination playoff will be conducted in all age group divisions.  All teams that

The 2011 National Senior Games will be in Houston.

TSGA (www.tsga.org):  The Texas State Games will be played in Temple in 2008, and the date for volleyball is SUNDAY, September 28, at the Temple High School.  Guess it is too late for the men folks and some ladies who might just desire to attend the National Senior Event in San Francisco area because I know of no men who qualified for state in any local events and only a few ladies.  Somehow, if we are going to have the TSGA games in March and April, we need them (TSGA) to change a group of their rules and regulations.  I will use this information from California to go to TSGA, to have some volleyball representation at their next meeting and then I will need help from both men and lady volleyball players to come us with changes, recommendations, and attend the meeting, if TSGA will invite us.

TSVA (www.tsmvolleyball.org)  The next scheduled event is in Farmers Branch with Margaret Young’s good food and volleyball play in July, like July 12 at the Farmers Branch Community Center.  I’m taking for granted the food again this year, have not confirmed that with her.

Hold on to your hats though, after all these years the South Austin Recreation Center, the CITY of AUSTIN will no longer let us have the volleyball courts for the weekend which has always been the middle of August.  So what do we do about Ralph’s Capitol City Fling.  That I am working on and suggestions are welcome.  But… they the City of Austin don’t love us anymore

 LSR (www.lsvolleyball.org) NTR (www.ntrvolleyball.org) SUR (www.suncountryvb.org)

Above are the three regions of USA Volleyball which Texas is divided, Lone Star, North Texas, and Sun Country.  The commissioners are Will Vick, Schertz; TX, Rodney Prater, Dallas TX: and Rudy Nava, Lubbock TX, respectively.  I believe the R word is real in the Texas Regions.  There is no doubt in my pea sized mind, there is a RECESSION in adult volleyball, big time.  I hope there will not be an overlap in our Senior play, but… the price a gallon of gas scares the britches off me.

Dates for play are:  Session #1 October 12 – 16 the 50s, 60s, 70s and men’s 77+; session #2, October 17 – 20 the 55s, 65s, and men’s 74+.  Teams must be Registered NLT August 20, 2008.

College Volleyball (www.avca.org): Division I of the men’s collegiate play saw Long Beach State, Ohio State, Pepperdine, and Penn State gather for the final four.  Parings were Long Beach vs Pepperdine and Ohio State vs Penn State.  Winners were Pepperdine and Penn State which then vied for the National Championship, which Penn State came out the winner.  Penn State made a complete sweep in volleyball as earlier in this college year, the ladies of Penn State also won the National Championship.

National TeamsThe United States men and women National Teams both qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.  The dates of the Olympics are 8 – 24 August 2008.  Both teams are on tours playing all sorts of teams tuning up for the big ones come August.  I don’t think they say yall in China so good luck to ALL, the men and ladies of the USA.

Financial ReportThe period since the last Newsletter, no events were hosted due to the fact that we cut every year after Arlington for the Senior Olympics (TSGA).  We must get TSGA to get onboard with us or host a TSVA recreational play event or two.  I have had several people contacting me desiring some type of play.  We, the TSVA are financially strong, a bank balance of $1,935.22.
